Habitat

We have been working the last month with the proposal for an art piece for Storoya Grendesenter. The result of the competition will be published before the end of the month which leaves us plenty of time to jump whenever the phone rings and tentatively open our email.
Our proposal is to build a small containerhouse at the main entrance of the community center. This room will function as a science center for the kids at the school, an art and crafts room for the daycare kids and a meeting room for the local naturalists, birdwatchers etc. We have called the project ”Habitat”.
The room is filled with scientific gear for field trips and studies of the closeby nature reserve - small field microscopes, infrared cameras and for taking water and earth samples. On top of the little building are birdhouses with surveilance cameras, for everything from bats to owls, so that the kids can follow the nesting. A weather station logs wind, rain, temperature, leaf moisture and pressure data.
The picture above shows the model we made for the proposal. The containers are clad in Siberian Larch which becomes a silvery grey after 3-5 years. Visible through the door are two computers. These computers would be used for datalogging from the weather station, taking snapshots from the birdhouses and for the kids to update their Habitat-blog with pictures, drawings and results from their field trips and research.
