Étapes #198 featuring Papp!

etapes_papp
Issue #198 of French design magazine ÈTAPES arrived in the mail this week. We were so proud to see Papp mentioned in the 10 page article about Pictoplasma, that we translated our part, as best we could. Not perfect, but roughly making sense. Let´s hope the article makes the international issue later on, so we will be able to read the whole story. The article is written by Yolanda Zappaterra and François Le Hérissier. Read More...

BZT PFE500-PX

Bilde 6
Our brand new BZT PFE500PX portal milling machine is ready and should be on it’s way from Germany to Tordal this week. We will finaly be able to mill our own parts for Papp and make parts for prototypes in our own workshop. Combined with our Thing-O-Matic we suddenly have the ability to both print and mill parts and we can hardly wait to get started!

Grand opening Seljord

Pasted Graphictarn_03
Grand opening at the 18. october! This incredible cool, 5 story, 17 meter high tower is built to spot the legendary sea serpent, living beneath the surface in the beautiful Seljord lake. We wont say more than that we also play a certain role in the project and are very happy to be working with Seljord og sogene. Invitation to the seminar here.

TA press clipping

TA_Character_walk_2011
TA, or Telemark Arbeiderblad, came and interviewed us at the Berlin Weekly during the Character Walk and Pictoplasma. They stayed for a long time and they really showed interest for our little robot. A little girl were also interviewed about our exhibition and she got some cardboard Papp-skins to decorate at home. We were also pleased that they mentioned our financial contributors Norsk Kulturråd, Vekst i Grenland and Drangedal Kommune, which are of great importance in these kind of projects.

Thing-O-Matic has arrived!

5245071105_8cfc7e2d33_o
Our Makerbot Thing-O-Matic tabletop 3D-printer has arrived! We’re bogged down with work - but hopefully we’ll squeeze in some playtime and assemble it this weekend!

Lowbrow Desktop

Our Macs sports new desktops in celebration of our new name, logo and slogan. As you can see from these three last posts we have dusted off an old forest-design by Hilde, switched it over to greyscale and beefed it up with some subtle shadows to catch the feel of these troll-infested forests...

Our Hearts closer to Our Brains

Messing about in Illustrator with a lowbrow-sticker for our Multipla resulted in a slogan / trademark for 3753% Tordal. We tried to get the essence of the lowbrow art movement or at least what we what we feel is the important difference between highbrow and lowbrow - the joy of creating as opposed to the calculating art - our hearts closer to our brains...

New logo and name!

Switching between art and design can be a challenge. Not so much for us; but for art museums and the general art community, the ”Design” bit in our name had a very negative effect in many ways when dealing with the purists.

Our new name is a bit more ambivalent and can point to whichever direction we please. 3573 is the area code for Tordal and when we found the old moonshine can in our old barn, the pieces sort of clicked together. We like the idea that the canister can be whatever we like. It can contain art, design, toys and all - and the main reason for us not updating our website lately is that we are working on a new design to reflect the new concept.

Hopefully we’ll launch the new site in january, stay posted!

Multipla

Our ”new” Fiat Multipla 100, 16v 1.6l ELX (the juicy version with all the options), with 97k on the clock arrived on thursday! One of the few cars out there which actually has an original and distinct design. Weekend was spent taking unnecessary long drives to buy bread etc; stereo loaded with italian spaghetti-western-music and both sunroofs open...

Return from Berlin

Back again from Berlin and working in our studio. Not to much time to update the blog these days but we’ll post some random pictures from the trip. The Pictoplasma conference gave as usual a visual overload of character design, we met some great people and signed up a new talented artist for the Papp exhibition. Read More...

Pictoplasma Berlin 2010

The tickets are bought, and we’re looking forward to a fantastic weekend at the Pictoplasma character design conference in Berlin! Papp will be traveling with us in a little suitcase, and if you manage to find us, we’ll give you a sneek peek!

Seasons greetings!

Our office is closed from the 17. of december to january 4th. From all of us to all of you: we wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year!

Best wishes from Ingrid, Hilde and Bard!

Fjellstad

After some three months mail correspondence with the real estate agent our house is paid for and the contract signed. While searching the webarchives of the Drangedal history preservation project we discovered this old photograph of our house. We guess it to be a photo taken to document the newly built house since the sidings of the groundfloor, the store, are not yet painted. Not yet sure of the age of this house or the identity of the different people on the photograph

Datsun Fairlady Hotrod Project

Spring is here and we made a test run with the Fairlady: at three quarter throttle the front wheel lifts from the ground, and a two meter high fountain of debris is kicked up from the rear end. The Force 32 big block engine delivers insane amounts of rpm and hp for its size.

Yuletime

Bards mom sent these two beautiful ladies to us. A simple but beautiful east german design from the sixties.

Power Failure

A heavy snowfall cut the power in Tordal on the day we got a visit from Ariane and Bjorn from Berlin. We made hot chocolate and espresso for our guests on the old stove in the kitchen...

First snowfall

Winter has arrived in Tordal. A steady drizzle of snow has fallen today and more is coming.

Tordal Pillow

Hilde joined the logofest, redesigning the livingroom pillows in pink and red.

Framvannet

Ingrid poses for the camera during our evening fishing trip with grandfather Kai-Erik. Framvannet (Frontwater) is the foremost of the two first lakes of Grytdalen in Tordal. The lake is a bit too heavily populated resulting in fish which are too small for the seasoned fisherman/woman, but catching them is still great fun (and they tastejust as good as their bigger brothers). Storoya Grendesenter will function as a school, kindergarten, sports center and library. The surrounding area under construction will have room for 15.000 residents, and 20.000 will have their daily work in the different business.

Nitro Groundshaker

New pob-bumper caps, drop targets, flippers, rubbers and a complete rebuild kit for both flippers. Steve Young’s Pinball Resource (highly recommended) has excellent service and the parts were of very high quality. The flipper rebuild kit fit perfectly and the plastics are excactly like the old originals... Read More...

Back in office

After a fantastic summer we are back in office. First office lunch was taken on the porch with iced coffee and scrambled eggs. The blog has been neglected for a while but we will try to update it more often with news from these woods.

We are geared up maximum for this coming fall and are hard at work with our small robots. We are superpleased to take part in the competion for the decoration of Storøya Grendesenter. Read more about this project in News from the woods. Read More...

New logo

We have been busy for the last couple of months. Moved from Oslo and our friends to Tordal into a new home, new kindergarden, new office and an uncharted territory as far as customer base is concerned.

We have been stepping up the design of our first superlimitededition designertoys series (more news soon). Have made six skateboard deck designs and put them out on our new web-store. Rebuilt our website, thank god for Rapidweaver. Made a new monospace font for our new logo, printed 1000 "I moose Tordal" bumperstickers + 2000 businesscards. The bumperstickers and businesscards will be mailed to all the potential design-hungry businesses in a 100 km circle (sounds more than it actually is) to let them know a design company has landed in these here woods....

Our house

The door of our new home / office. Spot the new I Moose Tordal sticker?

Greenfinch

This little finch crashed into our porch window in the night and lay peacefully on our little porch table this morning.

We are thinking about casting her in liquid acrylics - we keep her in our freezer until the two-component clear acrylics comes in the mail.

Tordal goes to Tordal

We have made the big step and moved from the hustle and bustle of Oslo to the woods of Tordal in Telemark. Here is a shot of our friends in Oslo on the moving day, huge rat scrounging for leftover pizza not in the frame.
