Extrascharf Knoblauch

A quickie mod on the eBoy / Kidrobot peecol design of the sunburnt german asphalt layer Bernd. This one is going on top of our office espresso machine. Extra Scharf, Knoblauch (extra hot, garlic sause) was our standard line at four o’clock in the morning in the various Berlin Kebab outlets. Superknüller is a german word meaning something like ”super offer” and which sounds slightly naughty in norwegian. Kaffeemaschine is selfexplanatory.

Need to make one for your espressomachine? If you feel weird enough to download the sign: Click the link below, print out, find something to tape the sign to and voila!

The Beacon of Beco

This is the main ON/OFF-switch for Beco. Disguised as a miniature rotating warningbeacon. The rotating light is simulated by four small lightbulbs being turned on and off in sequence.

The switch has six positions with which the user can decide which program Beco shall run. The different programs so far are: Display-mode, Roam, Hide in a dark place, Seek light and Hunt.

Oh, and if you haven't guessed it allready; this rotating Beacon is the inspiration for Beco's name...

The eyes of Beco

Becos eyes are made of three LEDs. The 10mm and 3mm LEDs are animated to fit the individual programs Beco will run. The 5mm LED is an IR emitter which Beco use to avoid bumping into obstacles. The black lower half of the eye contains the IR receiver which detects the bounced infrared light. This part of the eye will later be covered with a semitransparent fabric.

Beco Technical Drawing

A PDF of Beco. The schetch shows the materials and internal mechanics of Beco. A few details, for instance the arm-servo connection, are still to be added to the drawing. The position of the drivetrain, the Sumobot, is not correct. It probably need to be moved a few millimeters forward. Sumobot is a small robot with a 10X10 cm footprint from Parallax Inc.

Beco 1:2 scale model

Four pictures of a 1:2 scale modell of Beco. The arms are not attached to Becos shoulders yet, and the eyes are just two pieces of paper stuck to the clay.... Read More...

Beco

We are well into our second week with the design of two small Designer Toys. They will be handmade and one-of-a-kind pieces. Only one of the creatures has been given a name. The sketch above shows "Beco". A sad little guy with a rotating warning beacon on his head.

Each creature is an autonomous robot and comes with a preprogrammed set of behaviours. It will be possible to choose from two modes of operation. In the running-mode the creature crawls along, blinks its eyes, moves its arms and talks to itself in a very R2D2ish way. In the display-mode the creature will do all of the above minus the running. Running-mode is for playing with the creatures and display-mode is for when you want the creatures to sit still on your favourite shelf, officetable or mantlepiece.

PAPP logo

We are moving forward with the design of PAPP and it looks as if we will be ready too launch our first superlimitededition designertoys this fall. The 3D-design is almost finished and the materials lie ready for lasercutting.

We designed a new font for PAPP for the logo (above), we are very pleased with the logo and have allready designed three skate decks with the logo and some PAPP Mac OS X icons. The decks and icons will be made available on the evening of our launch. Watch out for more news in the near future!
