8 artists customize Papp

Papp, our first robot designer toy, is ready to launch this weekend at Porsgrunn Art Society. For the exhibition we invited 8 internationally renowned artists and artgroups to customize Papp and we are very proud to present the original works of:

Our ”new” Fiat Multipla 100, 16v 1.6l ELX (the juicy version with all the options), with 97k on the clock arrived on thursday! One of the few cars out there which actually has an original and distinct design. Weekend was spent taking unnecessary long drives to buy bread etc; stereo loaded with italian spaghetti-western-music and both sunroofs open...

Return from Berlin

The Pictoplasma conference gave as usual a visual overload of character design, we met some great people and signed up a new talented artist for the Papp exhibition.

Papp cardboard dummy arrives!

The first proper cardboard-box dummy arrived last week from Glomma Papp and it was a perfect fit! A few small revisions on the design and then the first 3000 boxes will go into production! We’ll post a small movie on the folding action soon: the box is designed to snap together without glue or (god forbid) staples....

Thor Heyerdahl Monuments Thwarted

Our proposal for the two Thor Heyerdahl monuments in Larvik was weighed and found to light (or maybe to heavy in the case of paperboat intended for the pier).

Three 6-8 metre high Moai statues made of gold metallic Alucobond facets on an aluminium skeleton were to be placed at the new higway off-ramp at Bommestad, and a huge paper boat of silvermetallic Alucobond was proposed for the pier.

The three Moai were intended to give instant recognition to the drivers passing at 100km/hr (+) on the E18 highway - and point directly to Thor Heyerdahl and his voyage to Rapa Nui. The paper boat represented his childhood in Larvik and the dramatic voyage with Tigris, a boat made of the same reed used to make papyrus.

Papp on tour

Papp has been selected as one of the few projects to go on tour on the highschools of Telemark as a part of Kulturskatten, a govermentfunded cultural education program for school children. Some 6500 students will meet Papp and see our lecture on designer toys through the next autumn, winter and spring semesters!

We’re therefore filling up this monster bulletproof(ish) Pelicase with three Papp 1.0 robots, a bundle of beautiful Papp skins, a Macbbok with a funky Keynote presentation and loads of batteries!

Artist Talk At TKS

Napp Design Logo

A new logo design for a new customer! This time the logo is for Napp Design, a product design company with a focus on packaging and the norwegian seafood business. The logo is a closed font with lots of space for texture. It is designed to be an interactive logo so that the designers at Napp can play with textures and colours.

Exit Habitat

Almost 18 months after we made the first sketch to Storøya Grendesenter, after 4Gb of generated data and some 270 pages of correspondance, the Habitat-project comes to an end. It should have been a fantastic laboratory for visiting schoolchildren and scientist, but sadly our customer could not allocate enough funds to complete the project.

We still believe the idea was sound but we are relieved to finally close the project down and put all our energy into Papp!

The new year starts with a big ”HELLO!!!” as our pet-designer-robot-toy PAPP debugs her first word!

Mother, our prototype PAPP, is now close to trying her first steps. Her four servoes; feet, eyes and arm are connected to and controlled by the microcontroller. During this week we will hook her up to our monster oscilloscope and start the work on her sensors!

Sneak peek at PAPP

Our designer toy robot PAPP is standing on its own two feet these days. This photo shows PAPP with its dummy cardboardbox. The actual box will be made of a different cardboard quality, microcorrugated sandwiched boards with a slightly different colour tone.

Drangedal Kulturkalender 09/10

We have made the new design for Drangedal Kulturkalender which (we hope) will be delivered with the local newspaper, Drangedalsposten, tomorrow morning.

The design is relatively simple; naked branches on thick white paper with three tones of blue, swooshing in the background. The two cones hanging from the top branch of page one are from the Drangedal municipal coat of arms. The format is A3, accordion-folded to eight pages, the font is the spindly-and-clean Century Gothic - regular for the headlines, alternating between regular and bold in the calendar.

Our logo design for Lauvstad Charolais is ready! We had an exciting but trying photoshoot with bull number 1009. Despite his appearance he is a docile creature mostly interested in beeing scratched behind his ears, not to keen on keeping a pose though. Our trusted Leica died and the borrowed camera had a four-second shutter-delay which was a bit sucky when trying to take a good picture of a 1000kg bull.

After some three months mail correspondence with the real estate agent our house is paid for and the contract signed. While searching the webarchives of the Drangedal history preservation project we discovered this old photograph of our house. We guess it to be a photo taken to document the newly built house since the sidings of the groundfloor, the store, are not yet painted. Not yet sure of the age of this house or the identity of the different people on the photograph

Our artpiece/stunt/urinal ”Ceci n’est pas un pissoir” is featured next weekend at Oslo by:Larm music festival and their art segment Nisjelandet. We’ll fill this funky retro-redneck-pissoir with a permanent party: monster woofers, lasers and shit will make this loo the place to be. A weird portaparty annoying the pee-needy, and a mix of Magrittes “La Trahison des Images” + Duchamp’s “Fontaine”.

Probably the best planned country-living-loo in existence; this pissoir was drawn in Rhino and detailed down to the last millimeter. Download the PDF and build your own; or the 3D-package (3dm and IGES)if you need a loo for your 3D-poo.

Bredtvet Resource Centre is a Norwegian national resource centre for special education, representing interdisiplinary expertise within the field of speech, language and communication disorders.

Bredtvet Resource Centre gives service to children, adolescents and adults with serious, specific and complex speech- and language disorders. The centre is responsible for 75% of the Norwegian population.

This five-panel painting, made by Hilde, was commisioned for the stairwell leading up to the library. Acrylic paint on canvas.

3D laboratory cabinets

We have packaged some of our work from the Habitat design library. These cupboards and cabinets from the Danish based company ST Education are to be used in the laboratory part of Habitat.

Habitat update

The Habitat project will soon be under construction! Our architect and structural engineer are detailing the blueprints. Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders and other contractors are receiving requests for quotes on the different jobs, and we are working around the clock with double and tripple-checking the figures in the budget.

Datsun Fairlady Hotrod Project

Spring is here and we made a test run with the Fairlady: at three quarter throttle the front wheel lifts from the ground, and a two meter high fountain of debris is kicked up from the rear end. The Force 32 big block engine delivers insane amounts of rpm and hp for its size.

Bunes beach 2008

Oaza Logo

A quick design for Oaza, the new skin and foot care boutique/therapeut in Drangedal.

This logo plays upon the name of the business, an oasis - a place for water, moisture, refreshment and rest. We would like to make some interesting folders and flyers with this logo - for instance a combination of brown paper with the logo embossed and printed in high-gloss. The oasis/desert-symbolism is easy to understand and its fun for us to play with the design.

Drangedal Bygdetun Logo

We have just finished the work on Drangedal Township Museums new logo!

We opted for a simple design and a simple font. The main body of the logo is an ax used to punch out a symbol on the timber before floating it down to the timber mill. The symbol shows who owns or has bought the timber. The township museum keeps a large collection of these beautiful handmade axes.

Animal Magnetism 1

We have just completed the poster, flyer and e-flyer for Henriette Pedersens new show Animal Magnetism 1. This is the first part of a trilogy about hysteria and it will have it's premiere on the 25. February at Black Box Teater in Oslo. At the end of March the performance will also open at Teaterhuset Avant Garden in Trondheim.

The main character in the poster is based on a picture from the dress rehearsal taken by Sveinn Fannar Johannsson (see more of these pictures at Henriettes website). Hilde made an ink and pencil-drawing, cooling down the skin tone of the dancer and adding a flaming hair. Magnetic lines flow out from the hands.

Researching this project was very interesting: female hysteria, animal magnetism and the more or less scientific studies and remedies concerning ”hysteric women”. We look forward to seeing the show, a must for those of you in Oslo or Trondheim!

A heavy snowfall cut the power in Tordal on the day we got a visit from Ariane and Bjorn from Berlin. We made hot chocolate and espresso for our guests on the old stove in the kitchen...

2nd place for Habitat

It was a close call; we finished as number two with our art proposal for Storoya Grendesenter, but sadly the jury did not choose Habitat.

Our proposal was to build a cross between a sculpture and a science center for the kids at the community center. Two 20’ containers created the space and a nest of sibirian Larch beams with lasercut acrylic glass branches surrounded it. This nest was to be filled with a plethora of science equipment for the kids. Digital motion detection cameras from National Geographic which the kids would set up in the forest one day and bring in the next too see which animals they ”caught” during the night. Field microscopes, beautiful Somso models of bees, snakes and other fauna in the area, water and soil-analysis equipment (too mention a few). On the roof of Habitat a weather station would collect data and make statistics which the kids could study and compare with bird migration, the power output from the sun and water power station of the school etc.

First PAPP prototype!

The first lasercut acrylic parts for PAPP arrived from Supermodeller this week! The top picture shows the taped-together-test-assembly. The bottom picture shows a closeup of the front.

The laser took away 0,15mm and we have adjusted the 3D-drawing to compensate for the loss of material. The final prototype (if everything fits - knock on wood) will be delivered by the end of next week, rrrrrr..... The launch is getting nearer - watch out for more news in the near future!

A quickie mod on the eBoy / Kidrobot peecol design of the sunburnt german asphalt layer Bernd. This one is going on top of our office espresso machine. Extra Scharf, Knoblauch (extra hot, garlic sause) was our standard line at four o’clock in the morning in the various Berlin Kebab outlets. Superknüller is a german word meaning something like ”super offer” and which sounds slightly naughty in norwegian. Kaffeemaschine is selfexplanatory.

Color Chart Deck

This deck is our back-and-forth to the shop deck. It is available in our webshop. It features an RGB color chart since Boardpusher who make our skatedecks insists on using RGB as their preferred color system. We made this deck to see just how the different colors will look on the finished deck and it is usefull for anyone who want to make decks with Boardpusher.

The first production run of the PAPP designertoy is on! The parts have been sent over to Supermodeller for lasercutting. Hopefully we will have the first parts here in Tordal by the end of the week.

PAPP ExtraBlack

Our logo has officially changed! The old one was based on two figures we made for our first webpage back in 1999 - www.boredturtle.com. We took the exact proportions of the bodies from these two figures and made the TordalType font for our logo. In a freak accident the resulting font was almost identical to the font and logo designed by Ariane Spanier for the Torpedo bookstore in Oslo, hence the need for a change...

Our new logo comes from the work with the PAPP logo. The PAPP ExtraBlack font is a fixedwidth font. The designer toy PAPP has a perfect cube shape and we wanted the font to reflect the complete squarishness of it all. Only the most important letters and symbols are included in this font.

20ft Iso Container Paper Model

This paper model of a 20ft ISO container is a by-product from the Habitat proposal. We have made some small improvements on the model (the roof on the container has been detailed) and made a 40ft container model as well. Both models are available for download.

We have been working the last month with the proposal for an art piece for Storoya Grendesenter. The result of the competition will be published before the end of the month which leaves us plenty of time to jump whenever the phone rings and tentatively open our email.

PAPP designer toy

We are moving forward with the design of PAPP and it looks as if we will be ready too launch our first superlimitededition designertoys this fall. The 3D-design is almost finished and the materials lie ready for lasercutting.

We designed a new font for PAPP for the logo (above), we are very pleased with the logo and have allready designed three skate decks with the logo and some PAPP Mac OS X icons. The decks and icons will be made available on the evening of our launch. Watch out for more news in the near future!

Framvannet

Ingrid poses for the camera during our evening fishing trip with grandfather Kai-Erik. Framvannet (Frontwater) is the foremost of the two first lakes of Grytdalen in Tordal. The lake is a bit too heavily populated resulting in fish which are too small for the seasoned fisherman/woman, but still great fun (and taste).

Hopin' for it is made by Hilde & Bard. Hilde had the initial idea of a girl kicking a chair and shot the footage with Cecilie Nissen playing the angry girl. Hilde did the linework and Bard inked the black sweater and sneakers....

Ghost

Ghost is designed to sabotage telesales. When the unwanted call comes, place the handset into the arms of Ghost and let Ghost talk with the telesales-operator. Ghost listens to the telephone line, when the operator is quiet for more than a couple of seconds it plays an audio file from its library. The audio-library is designed never to give an answer which could end the call, never "no" or "yes" but vague answers and questions.

This little robot was made in 2001for an exhibition at Trans Art, a small gallery in Trondheim. Most of the time it hides underneath its cardboardbox. At intervals it lifts the box and starts running in search for a new place to hide.
